About Hours & Shifts

Free calculators for the time you work: hours between two times, weekly time cards and timesheets, overtime and payroll hours, paid time off, and shift rotations as a year calendar.

Why it exists

Most free time card and shift calculators are sales pages for scheduling software, or are crowded with ads, and several get the basics wrong: a night shift counted as zero hours, California overtime counted twice, a 2-2-3 rotation that leaves shifts uncovered, a calendar file that costs money. These tools try to be the plain, correct version, with the working shown.

How the numbers are worked out

  • Times are read the way people write them. An end time earlier on the clock than the start is the next day; when AM or PM is missing, the calculator says how it read the time.
  • Overtime follows the US federal rule (over 40 hours in each workweek, from the Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet 23) and California’s daily, weekly and seventh-day rules (from the Labor Commissioner), without counting the same hours twice. You can also set your own limits.
  • Shift patterns come from published definitions, and every one is checked by an automated test that each day is staffed the way the pattern promises.
  • Totals are worked out from exact minutes and rounded only when shown.

The pages explain rules and give examples; they are not legal, tax or payroll advice. Your employer’s records, your contract and your local labour office have the final word.

Privacy by design

Everything runs in your browser. What you type is kept on your device so your week is still there tomorrow, and the PDF, CSV and calendar files are made on your device too. Nothing is uploaded. The privacy page has the details.
