How to convert minutes to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Payroll systems, invoices and spreadsheets use decimal hours because they can be multiplied by a pay rate: 7.75 hours × $20 = $155.
To go back from decimal hours to minutes, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.4 hours × 60 = 24 minutes, so 8.4 hours is 8 hours 24 minutes.
Don’t read decimal hours as minutes. 8.30 decimal hours is 8 hours 18 minutes, not 8 hours 30 minutes, and 8.5 hours is 8 hours 30 minutes.

Tenths of an hour (6-minute increments)
Some employers pay, and many professionals bill, in tenths of an hour (6-minute steps). Billing often rounds up to the next tenth; this chart rounds to the nearest one:
| Minutes | Tenths | Minutes | Tenths |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 0.0 | 33–38 | 0.6 |
| 3–8 | 0.1 | 39–44 | 0.7 |
| 9–14 | 0.2 | 45–50 | 0.8 |
| 15–20 | 0.3 | 51–56 | 0.9 |
| 21–26 | 0.4 | 57–60 | 1.0 |
| 27–32 | 0.5 |
Rounding to the nearest tenth: 0.05 hours is 3 minutes, so minutes 1–2 round down to 0.0 and minute 3 rounds up to 0.1. Many payroll rules round 3 minutes down instead; check yours.

Converting a whole time card
Paste or type one time per line in Convert a list, for example each day’s hours from a paper time card. You get each one in decimal hours and the total. Add the times first and convert the total once, rather than rounding each day: five days of 7:20 is 36:40, or 36.67 hours, while adding five rounded 7.33s gives 36.65.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes = 0.5, 45 minutes = 0.75 and 20 minutes = 0.33 (rounded). For hours and minutes, add the whole hours: 6:45 = 6.75 hours.
What is 1 hour and 45 minutes in decimal?
1.75 hours: 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75, plus the 1 hour.
What is .25 of an hour?
15 minutes. Multiply the decimal by 60: 0.25 × 60 = 15. Likewise 0.5 hours is 30 minutes and 0.75 hours is 45 minutes.
What is .23 of an hour?
About 14 minutes: 0.23 × 60 = 13.8 minutes, which rounds to 14.
What is .42 of an hour?
About 25 minutes: 0.42 × 60 = 25.2 minutes. In the chart, 25 minutes is 0.42 hours.
Why does payroll use decimal hours?
A pay rate is per hour, so hours have to be a single number to multiply by it. 7 hours 30 minutes at $18 an hour is 7.5 × $18 = $135; you can’t multiply 7:30 by $18 directly.
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes in Excel?
In Excel, divide the decimal hours by 24 and format the cell as [h]:mm. For example =A2/24 shows 7.75 as 7:45. To go the other way, multiply a time cell by 24 and format it as a number: =A2*24.
Should I round each day or the total?
Convert the total if you can. Rounding each day to hundredths and then adding can be a few hundredths off. Your employer’s payroll rules decide which one counts.
