How to turn an hourly wage into a salary
Multiply the hourly wage by the hours you work in a week, then by 52 weeks. A full-time year of 40-hour weeks is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. That counts paid holidays and vacation as paid hours, as a salary does.
A quick estimate: double the hourly wage and add three zeros. $25 an hour is about $50,000. It assumes 2,000 hours a year, so the real figure for a 40-hour week is 4% higher.
How to turn a salary into an hourly wage
Divide the yearly salary by 2,080 (or by your hours a week × 52). $60,000 a year is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. If you are paid a salary and often work longer weeks, you earn less for each hour you work: $60,000 over 50-hour weeks is $60,000 ÷ 2,600 = $23.08 an hour.

Part-time hours, unpaid weeks and 37.5-hour weeks
- Part time: set Hours a week to what you work. 25 hours a week at $18 is $18 × 25 × 52 = $23,400 a year.
- 37.5-hour weeks are common in the UK and in many offices: a year is 1,950 hours, so a £30,000 salary is £15.38 an hour.
- Unpaid time off: set Paid weeks a year to the weeks you are paid. With two unpaid weeks it is 50: $25 an hour × 40 × 50 = $50,000. A week’s pay stays $1,000 for each week you work; the monthly figure spreads the year’s pay over 12 months.
- Days a week sets the daily figure: 40 hours over 4 days is 10-hour days, so $25 an hour is $250 a day.
Every two weeks or twice a month?
Paid every two weeks (biweekly), you get 26 paychecks a year; paid twice a month (semimonthly), 24. On a $52,000 salary that is $2,000 every two weeks or $2,166.67 twice a month. With biweekly pay, two months a year have three paydays, which is why a biweekly paycheck × 2 is less than the monthly salary.
Before tax
Every figure here is gross pay: before income tax, social security, health insurance and other deductions. Take-home pay depends on where you live, your filing status and your benefits; for an estimate use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator in the US or gov.uk: estimate your Income Tax in the UK. Overtime isn’t included either: an hourly worker paid time and a half for hours over 40 earns more than these figures in a long week (see the overtime calculator).
