How to convert regular time to military time
- Morning, 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM: write the time as four digits without the colon. 9:15 AM is 0915 and 11:30 AM is 1130.
- Afternoon and evening, 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM: add 12 to the hour. 2:30 PM is 1430 and 11:45 PM is 2345.
- Noon: 12:00 PM is 1200, and 12:30 PM is 1230. Don’t add 12.
- Midnight: 12:00 AM is 0000, and 12:30 AM is 0030. The midnight hour is 00.
To go back, take 12 from any hour of 13 or more and add PM: 1900 is 7:00 PM. Hours 01 to 11 are AM, 12 is the noon hour and 00 the midnight hour.

How to say military time
Say the first two digits, then the last two. Whole hours end in “hundred”: 0700 is “zero seven hundred” and 1400 is “fourteen hundred”. Other times are two numbers: 1430 is “fourteen thirty” and 2015 is “twenty fifteen”. A leading zero is said, so 0630 is “zero six thirty” (some people say “oh six thirty”), and so is the zero of minutes 1 to 9: 1305 is “thirteen zero five”. Many people add “hours” at the end: “fourteen thirty hours”.
Midnight: 0000 or 2400?
Both are midnight. 0000 is the start of a day and 2400 the end of one, so a shift from 1600 to 2400 ends at midnight on the date it started. Many employers avoid 2400 and write 2359, or 0000 of the next day, instead. The converter reads 2400 as the end of the day.
Hours between two military times
Take the start from the end. From 0700 to 1530 is 15:30 − 7:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes, which is 8.50 decimal hours. If the end is smaller than the start, the shift went past midnight: add 24 hours to the end first, so 2200 to 0600 is 30:00 − 22:00 = 8 hours. Take any unpaid break off the result.
Don’t subtract the four digits as one number. 1530 − 0700 = 830, which looks like 8.30 hours, but it is 8 hours 30 minutes: 8.5 decimal hours. And 1510 − 0750 = 760 is nonsense; the real answer is 7 hours 20 minutes.
To turn the minutes into decimal hours for payroll, use the minutes to decimal chart; for a whole week of punches, the time card calculator takes 24-hour times too.
Military time zones
Military and aviation messages often end a time with a letter for its time zone. 1430Z (“Zulu”) is 14:30 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC); J (“Juliet”) means the local time wherever the reader is. On a time card or a work schedule, military time is just the 24-hour clock in your own time zone.
Frequently asked questions
What time is 1500 in military time?
1500 is 3:00 PM. For any hour of 13 or more, take away 12 and add PM: 15 − 12 = 3.
What is 7 PM in military time?
1900. Add 12 to any PM hour from 1 to 11: 7 + 12 = 19, written 1900 and said “nineteen hundred”.
How do you write 12:30 AM in military time?
0030. The hour after midnight is hour 00, so 12:30 AM is 0030 and 12:59 AM is 0059. 12:30 PM, in the afternoon, is 1230.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 is midnight at the start of a day and 2400 midnight at its end. Many schedules use 0000 only, writing a shift that ends at midnight as ending at 0000 the next day.
How do you say 0800 in military time?
“Zero eight hundred” (or “oh eight hundred”). Whole hours end in “hundred”; 0830 is “zero eight thirty”.
What is 2200 in regular time?
10:00 PM. 22 − 12 = 10, and any hour from 13 to 23 is PM.
How many hours is 0700 to 1900?
12 hours: 19 − 7 = 12. For an overnight shift like 1900 to 0700, add 24 to the end first: 31 − 19 = 12 hours as well.
Why is it called military time?
In the US and Canada the 24-hour clock is called military time because the armed forces use it. Most of the world just calls it the 24-hour clock, and hospitals, police and fire services and airlines use it too, because it never mixes up AM and PM.
